Please listen carefully to the following conversation between a pilot and the chief purser of the Cathay Pacific Airlines in the airport lounge. Then answer the following questions:

Judy: Hi John, how are you doing? May I join you?
John: Of course, Judy. Please take a seat over here. How are you doing here in Singapore? Are you still supervising the cabin crew team?
Judy: Yes. I am doing OK. How long have you been with the company now?
John: Oh. Almost 14 years now.
Judy: What made you interested in this field?
John: It all started one day when my mother took me to a small airfield somewhere outside London. I watched the planes taking off and landing and circulating over the airfield the whole afternoon. It was so wonderful. It was then and there I decided that I want to be a pilot as my career.
Judy: Are you a pilot before joining Cathay Pacific?
John: Well, I was working for Virginia Airlines in United Kingdom for 10 years as a co-pilot before joining Cathay Pacific.
Judy: Did you have any flight training before that?
John: Yes. I went to study in the Academy of Aviation. It was there I picked up most of the basic concepts of aviation. And I was also lucky to be coached by really professional pilots. After graduation, I was immediated selected by Virginia Airlines.
Judy: What kind of plane did you fly in Virginia Airlines?
John: Mostly small, single engine planes for domestic routes.
Judy: Oh? How would you compare your experience between flying those small planes verse the large 747s in Cathay Pacific?
John: Boy, are they different. The planes I flew previously are small, not too automated and less stable when compared with the 747s that we are flying now which are fully automated and very, very stable. But flying those small planes are fun, though you have to pay more attention to the details. Now, on a 747, we have 3 persons managing the flight. I have a co-pilot and a flight engineer on the plane with me to focus on other aspects of the flight.
Judy: Since there are three of you in the flying team, can the flight engineer substitute the pilot sometime?
John: Absolutely not, in normal circumstances, because the pilot must be very careful with each step of the flight procedure, and carry them out leg to leg, with practically no margin for error. Otherwise, it can cause serious consequences.
Judy. Do small planes fly at the same altitude as large planes?
John: No. Small planes usually fly at the height about 8,000 to 10,000 feet. But large planes usually fly around 33,000 feet..
Judy: Let me ask you another question. You have been flying in Europe and Asia and worked with their local ground staffs. Is there any difference working with the Europeans and Orientals?
John: Yes, of course. They came from completely different backgrounds and they have totally different customs. In general, though, Europeans are more open and direct, but Orientals are more conservative and indirect. Generally, Orientals would not come out and tell you what is in their mind.
July: Would it cause you any problem on job?
John: It is OK. After all, in this field, you must learn to get along with others.
Judy: Well, how long do you plan to fly?
John: Probably till my retirement. You see, the benefits are really good. After that, I plan to return to England to enjoy my retirement life.
Judy: Sounds good. My best wishes.
John: You too.
